YOUR INDEPENDENT VOICE
Independent Candidate for the South Ward- Moreland City Council
PROTECT PUBLIC SPACES
An Independent Voice
As a proud Brunswick resident of over ten years, I’m running for Council for the very first time to represent you. I love this community, and I want to protect and enhance what’s great; our arts and cultural scene, our diversity, our wonderful natural environment as well as our quality of life. As a proudly gay man, I feel at home in Brunswick – and I want everyone to feel welcome here, no matter your background or history. I’m driven to run for Council for the first time to protect our small businesses, our seniors, our young people and our community as a whole.
Having a career in business development and stakeholder management means that I understand the importance of building strong relationships in order to achieve pragmatic solutions. I’ve also spent 15 years volunteering my time and skills in the youth leadership and development space, so I recognise the impact and value that young people contribute to society.
I believe that a pragmatic approach to politics is what is needed at a local level. The community deserves someone who will represent them without the distraction of party politics. As an independent, I believe it’s important to work to promote the interests of the whole electorate.
WHAT I STAND FOR
As your independent voice, I aim to represent you, not the interests of any political party. I don’t want a set of ideologies or dogma to dictate what is best for the people of Brunswick, and wider Moreland.
People choose to live in Brunswick (from East to West) for the simple fact that it offers them the best life possible. The South Ward offers a great mix of residential streets, shopping precincts, restaurants, cafes and bars, as well as vibrant public spaces.
As your Local Councillor, I will protect the valued and special things, in our community, that make our suburbs the best places to live in Melbourne.
SENSIBLE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
Moreland is growing and I want to make sure that the Council is putting the needs of the community before the needs of big developers. We shouldn’t lose what makes our suburbs special in order to build shoebox sized apartment complexes. We should be able to live comfortably within our community without the fear of being ‘run out of town’ because of exorbitant prices in an over-developed market. If elected, I will stand up for development that fosters local community, whether it be residential, commercial, or public infrastructure. I will not let our suburbs become over developed for the sake of ‘progress’.
SUPPORT FOR THE LGBTQIA+ COMMUNITY
The South Ward is a hub of multiculturalism and pluralism. We ought to celebrate that. As your Local Councillor, I’d ensure that the City of Moreland celebrates our community with recognition of pride, mental health support and more overt representation. As a proud gay man, I believe strongly that you aspire to what you can see.
WORKING FOR FAMILIES
Supporting families means supporting the next generation of our community. By keeping our green spaces green, providing enriching opportunities for exploration and play in addition to supporting the valuable work of children's services staff from childcare workers to maternal and child health nurses, we can ensure the best possible outcomes for our local families.
PROTECTION OF THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT
We all know that the South Ward, and greater Moreland, offers unique parklands and natural amenities. Our green spaces are becoming more important than ever as it offers us a place to relax and unwind in our busy city, coupled with the fact that we must protect the environment. I will make sure that Council enhances what green spaces we have in Moreland.
With the impact of COVID-19 causing stress on us all, our local small business owners have been affected tremendously. I’ll leverage Council to use local suppliers, encourage trade within Moreland and support our local businesses. As a resident, I understand the importance of local business in creating a community.
From my work with young and vulnerable people over many years, I’ve seen just how much Local Government can do to support young people, and their mental health. Now, I want to ‘jump the fence’ and use the resources of Council to deliver expanded mental health services for Moreland’s vulnerable. It’s the difference we need to make.
As more and more of us get around on bikes, it’s become clear that Council has not done enough to support our growing cycling community. Not only is it dangerous, but it’s encouraging people into cars - when we should be doing the opposite! On Council, I will be your voice for greater cycling infrastructure in the South Ward.
CREATIVE AND COLLABORATIVE SPACES
As a performance artist myself, I understand the importance of local artists having the support and structure needed to express themselves. Local artists, not only entertain but provoke thought within our community. Ultimately, Council should be supporting The Arts to flourish across Brunswick and Moreland alike, as an important part of our cultural fabric of the Inner North.
Our local area is bettered by our diversity, yet Council too often forgets the important role that our elders play in creating community. With a myriad of multicultural clubs, sporting clubs and community groups around, our seniors need the support of Council to ensure that they can participate in the best of what our community has to offer.
As a user and supporter of public transport, I’ll be a strong voice advocating for greater public transport options. The Upfield train-line, the 58, 19, 1, 6 and 96 tramlines are imperative to the life and sustainability of our community and environment. I’ll stand up for public transport, from frequency to coverage and accessibility.
A DEEPER LOOK
Come with me as I explore further the issues that matter to Moreland
I stand for more independent voices in local government. It's time that politicians put party ideology aside and work with each other for the benefit of the community. I want to work with other Councillors in a non-partisan way, that considers the wide range of community opinion along with expert advice.
The following preferences are are based off research, relationships and who I believe would work hard for the community. I implore each voter to do their own research and decide for themselves the order in which they will number all boxes.
When voting, please number every box in order of preference.
Please do not use ticks or crosses.
I’d love to hear from you about what concerns you have, and how I can best represent you.
